President Bush Cracks Down On Firms Who Hire Illegals?

Class One Keyboard Alert:

From the WaPo article, ‘Unscrupulous’ Firms Are Faulted – Bush Seeks Bigger Fines for Illegal Hiring:

President Bush told the nation’s most prominent business group yesterday that “unscrupulous” employers have contributed to the illegal immigration crisis in the United States by knowingly hiring undocumented workers, and called for steep new penalties on those exploiting the shadow economy.

[...] “Businesses that knowingly employ illegal workers undermine this law and undermine the spirit of America,” the president said during a speech against a backdrop of U.S. flags, images of the Statue of Liberty and the slogan “Comprehensive Immigration Reform.” “And we’re not going to tolerate it in this country.” Although most businesses abide by the law, he said, “there are some unscrupulous folks who want to take advantage of low-cost labor.” [emphasis added]

See, if I hadn’t warned you, you might have inadvertently spewed out a mouthful of hot coffee or cold Dr. Pepper or whatever your caffeine of choice is all over your keyboard. The audacity of the man just boggles the mind. Even the feeble enforcement efforts of the Clinton administration stopped when Bush took office. So for him to say these things with a straight face is just mind-blowing. Luckily for me, I’ve got Bobby Jindal in the House and David Vitter in the Senate, and both have As on their immigration report cards. The likelihood of me voting for Mary Landreiu is about the same as it is for me to have an abortion, which is to say, ZERO. I really feel for the people who live in areas where they have to choose between an open border Republican and a Democrat. It’s a tough call, and while I think incumbents are (unfortunately) safe in general, I do think the GOP will take some hits this November. But I’m not at all sympathetic. They’ve earned each and every electoral bruise they get.
