How Others See Us

The article, The Crying American, on Gather.com just knocked my socks off. It is a damning and well-deserved indictment of both the American right and left.
As I read and hear the comments of various Americans about their resentment over what they perceive to be an ever growing infringement on their “rights” as a free people I find myself either in tears over their ignorance or ready to burst into laughter over their simple mindedness. Not to say that I find the average American “stupid”. I don’t.
It’s the bellyaching that I and many of my fellow countrymen find humorous, and in some cases, even disgraceful. [...]
We lost Tibet to the Chinese. That is a fact. But it is wrong to say that the Tibetan people did not fight back! And it is equally wrong to believe that we are not STILL fighting the Chinese. The difference between us and America is that we are NOT FIGHTING EACH OTHER! We have always taken our situation seriously. Unlike you Americans who enjoy the leisure to “play” at a war on terrorism while your soldiers die in the field we Tibetans fight and die side-by-side. There is no time to play at war. We have no resources to entertain our enemies with while we try to get vital information out of them. For us, this IS life and death on a grand scale! And in this most desperate time we would not dream of a revolution against our own people as so many Americans claim they are for against their own government. Which brings up an interesting question: When you “over throw” your government what dictator do you prefer to place in power? [...]
In closing, let me say, AMERICANS STOP YOUR CRYING AND BELLY ACHING. You live in a wonderous country. If you don’t like the way things are going then GET OUT AND VOTE! But more then this, WORK TO CREATE CHANGES. Instead of blubbering over how miserable your life is because the government is screwing you spend the same amount of time contacting your representatives. Unscrew your ass from the couch or bar stool! Forego the next sporting event to spend time contacting the right people to make the changes you seek. But whatever you do, don’t say the only way to make changes is by violence! You Americans have the opportunity to make peaceful changes now. Revolution by means of violence is a very hard road to travel, filled with much grief and many tears. Believe me, I know.
Read it all, and consider passing it on.
