Here are a few news stories that caught my eye.
Democrats Who Back Terror Bill Get Cover
Democrats who support President Bush terror bill get political cover
(AP) Breaking with their party, a handful of Democrats in competitive congressional races voted to approve President Bush’s system to interrogate and prosecute terrorism suspects.
In doing so, they took away one arrow Republicans plan to use in their soft-on-security attack on Democrats.
This is hilarious. If anything, the Republican position has been reinforced, as the AP just admitted that the Democrats are in fact soft on terror, except for those few “mavericks” who voted with the Republicans on this issue.
Justices to Hear Abortion, Integration Cases
‘Partial-Birth’ Procedure and Schools’ Race Policies to Dominate Court’s Agenda
The conservative push on social issues is just what Democrats and liberals, concerned about the future of Roe v. Wade , the 1973 case that recognized a right to abortion, warned against during confirmation hearings for the two Bush appointees now on the court — Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr.
You would think that everyone could at least agree that partial birth abortion should be stopped. There’s been ample medical testimony that partial birth abortion is actually more dangerous to the mother than giving birth vaginally or via C-section. But people who defend a mother’s choice to abort her baby earlier in the pregnancy seem to feel that they must defend this barbaric practice as well, to avoid any chink in the abortion wall. It’s a sad statement on the ideals and priorities of American society today.
Specter Challenges GOP on Detainee Issue
True to his reputation as a Republican maverick, Sen. Arlen Specter on Thursday was out front defending the right of suspected terrorists to file court challenges to their detention.
I guess McCain’s just been getting too much air time to suit Specter. This is a completely new “right” – never before seen in this country or as far as I know, any other. Certainly the POWs in previous wars couldn’t sue to get out of “jail” – they were in for the duration of the war. And aren’t Republicans the clever ones for working to let this jerk keep his job? I do hope that the next time he’s up for re-election, PA voters will give him the Murtha treatment –
Crowd rallies to ‘Boot Murtha’
“Supporters of yesterday’s “Boot Murtha” campaign heard a series of speakers attack Murtha for comments he made about the ongoing investigation into last November’s killings of civilians in Haditha, Iraq, allegedly by a squad of Marines. The men are confined to the brig at Camp Pendleton.
None of the servicemen have been charged but Murtha, after military officials briefed him, said they were guilty of murder.
“Jack, you can’t say things like that and get away with it,” Bailey said.”
Actually, the story isn’t accurate – Murtha made his statements a week before he was briefed.
