Baptism Cannonball and Unwasted Pain

A friend emailed me this video that I thought was pretty amusing. I hope y’all enjoy it too.

I’ve got medical things to tend to tomorrow, but I do have some things I’m going to try to finish and post on Saturday. I will leave with something I’ve been pondering since my husband told me about it this morning.

He had an on the job injury nearly a year ago – the result of a previous injury that left him with some pins and hardware permanently in his wrist. He overcompensated and tore a ligament. They tried various things (rest, medication, physical therapy) to get him healed up, but finally he had surgery last week. The end of the ligament was beyond repair and had to be removed, and then the ligament was reattached. He told me that God had revealed something to him about all this.

The injury is like sin – the way we try everything possible to hide it, ignore it, make it go away, or otherwise deal with it. Finally it took the intervention of the Great Physician to cut it out, and permanently resolve the problem. It’s painful, and it will take time for him to heal. Even after he heals, he’ll be changed. He can’t go back to doing what originally caused the injury. But he’s better. Once the surgical wounds heal, he won’t be in the constant pain he’s been in for over eight months. And the physical therapy he’ll undergo will build him back up, teach him the correct way to use the arm without causing another injury, and make him stronger – much like the process of sanctification.

It’s something to think about. God is ecology-minded, and doesn’t waste a bit of pain that we may go through – no matter what the source of the pain is. He is glorified in all of it; whether the pain of sin which shows how much we need him, or other pain that makes us cling to him for strength and encouragement, it is never without some benefit. God has been providing me with encouragement and hope from a variety of sources, not least of which are you commenters from the last post. I’m thanking God for you today.

[Update - yes, I mangled that analogy, and my husband told it a lot better in any event. But you get the idea. :-) ]
