I have a particular interest in DWIs since my daughter and mother were hit by a drunk in August, so this article caught my eye:
DWI offenders to be tested by ankle bracelet
NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans traffic court officials today announced the trial run of a new technological monitoring system for DWI offenders. …
The system, manufactured by Denver-based Alcohol Monitoring Systems Inc., includes a high-tech alcohol detection ankle bracelet, which measures the level of alcohol contained in person’s perspiration, is worn by the offender on a 24-hour, seven-days-a week basis for a period determined by the court.
Of course, if Martha Stewart could manage to get her ankle bracelet off, I suspect some drunk who is positive he can “handle it” will as well. But I’m glad to see that they’re at least trying something different.
Interesting statistic: According to MADD, nearly 17,000 people lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes just in 2005. That’s more than five times the number of American soldiers killed in Iraq since the war began. Where’s the outrage over this?
