The Liberal Avenger has been caught exposing himself in public. Sure, that’s an inflammatory post title. And dishonest, too, because it certainly implies something about him that is untrue. So far as I’m aware, he’s not a sex offender, convicted or otherwise. So why the headline? He has publicly exposed himself as a hypocrite and a liar. As this post title illustrates, words matter. And even things that are said about someone using an internet pseudonym should be handled responsibly and ethically.
He complains about the fact that people were offended by what Amanda Marcotte actually wrote, and describes the whole embarrassing episode as “religious bigots, who falsely claimed that a couple of bloggers Edwards had hired were religious bigots.” His reading comprehension problems aside (Marcotte is obviously a religious bigot as her own writing indicates, which is not to say that Bill Donohue is not one also), he is in no position to criticize anyone for “false claims.” On his own blog, he permitted someone with admin access to edit the comment of a reader who had been making a polite and respectful argument – and not just delete a comment that they didn’t like, but add several paragraphs worth of a disgusting incest fantasy. He or someone else deleted the comment. Then he accused Patterico – one of the people who got a screen shot of the offensively edited comment – of making it up, suggesting that Patterico ought to be ashamed of himself. I’m not sure, given this episode, that The Liberal Avenger understands the meaning of shame. He’s allowed a respectful and polite commenter to be abused on his site, he’s lied about it, and he’s made a fool of himself accusing another blogger for what a guest poster did. (I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt that he did not edit the comment himself.)
What’s the expression? It’s not the crime, it’s the cover-up. But it’s too late – he’s already exposed.
