John McCain, D-AZ

A big story this week is whether Kerry or McCain initiated the conversations where McCain was invited to be run as Kerry’s VP. I don’t care who initiated it. The point is that it’s plausible. People hear this story and don’t immediately respond, “No freakin’ way!” because they think it could be true. They think it could be true because of the years of McCain calling himself a Republican while frequently acting like a Democrat when it is convenient for him to do so. Picture someone telling you that Hillary or Edwards was considering jumping ship and joining the Republicans. You know there is no possible way it would happen. They have decades of consistency on their side. Hillary tries to downplay her leftist views, but she’s not seriously trying to hide them and couldn’t even if she wanted to. Every word and every act she’s taken confirm her core beliefs and loyalty to her party. Same for Edwards. McCain? Not so much. I think his main core belief is that he deserves to be President. McCain has enjoyed a boatload of adulatory press coverage each time he stabs his party in the back, and now he’s paying for it.
Bottom line: if McCain wanted to be the Republican presidential nominee, he shouldn’t have acted like an independent all these years.
