The Wild, Wild Left: Laws Optional

Michelle Malkin has linked to several examples of lawlessness lately.

In San Francisco, a gang of cyclists terrorized a family and did over $5,300 worth of damage to the minivan which was carrying two adults and five children. No arrests, no repercussions, but the cops did apologize to the family. Gee, thanks. That helps. Turns out this is merely an escalation in a long series of offenses by the gang of cyclists. They disobey traffic laws, scratch cars, and block traffic every month, and suffer no consequences for it.

Seattle actually paid the violent 1999 WTO protesters.

The city of Seattle will pay $1 million to WTO protesters who were arrested in Westlake Park seven years ago and will clear their records, in a settlement announced today.

Sure, the cops blew it, I think everybody agrees with that, but let’s not forget that this was not a calm, peaceful protest, either. It was riots that caused millions of dollars worth of damage. As the title of the article states, “The trashers set the tone, the city follows.” So this payoff was the best solution they could come up with? Sad.

And the next generation of college students are learning the lesson well – violently shut down (and threaten with death) conservative speakers, and the worst you can expect is the dreaded comfy chair.

Blog commenters on both the right and left occasionally refer to the civil war they believe is coming. I generally laugh it off or at most reply with some snark, but think about this trend toward politically motivated violence. I certainly wouldn’t call it a civil war, and I don’t think we’re in danger of that in the near future. But it is a very disturbing trend. As long as it goes unpunished – or worse, is rewarded – it’s going to increase.
