Why Register.com Sucks

I swear, their interface is the most unnecessarily complex and hardest to work with interface that I have ever seen. And as a technical writer, documenting software in development, I saw a LOT.

Want email accounts on a forwarded domain? Get out your wallet. Basic email is $20 per user per year. And that’s for a lousy ten MB.

Want to change the MX record? You can’t set it to an IP address – something I have done successfully at other registrars for clients who wanted email at one host and the website on another.

Want to try to turn off their website forwarding? It is ridiculously expensive, by the way. Be prepared to jump through some hoops. And since there are no instructions, be prepared to explain this repeatedly to their support people who repeatedly remind you that they provide hosting, too! Yeah. Because this is so incredibly convenient, I’m going to overpay you for that too. Riiiight.

I will give them one credit – they have 24 hour support. But that’s all I’ll give them. Even if I weren’t tired and cranky, this is ridiculous.

If you’re thinking of buying a domain name, whatever you do, don’t use register.com.

  1. Take away 1/2 of the credit for 24 hour support. If you want to transfer away a domain name from register.com, you must go through the “Business Center” to get the authorization code. The Business Center hours are 8am – 6pm EST Monday to Friday. But wait, it gets better. They still won’t give you the authorization code until you provide a bogus “security code” which they e-mail to the administrative contact. They explained to me twice that this run around was purely for security reasons. So I asked, “How is e-mailing me a ’security code’, then having me repeat back to you over the phone to get the authorization code any more secure than just e-mailing me the stupid authorization code in the first place?” They didn’t have an answer.

Good to know, thanks. I hate the commercials because they’re pretty cheesy, but I have to say I’m really satisfied with GoDaddy so far. I’ve had to call their support line several times and they’ve answered quickly, they spoke clear English, and were genuinely helpful.

    Interesting website, btw.
