The Fringe Left Is Starting To Make Sense

Since 2001, I have held the fringe left in contempt. They’re idiots. They’re lunatics. They espouse ideas and ideals that are antithetical to what America is all about. Overthrow the government? Just wait until the next election, you freaks – you’ll have your chance then. That’s how it’s supposed to work.

And yet, today I and a whole lot of other people on the right are getting some insight into why they are the way they are. No, we’re not going to take the streets with anarchists’ black masks and garbage can lids… we’re not going to make death threats or revel in whatever misfortune eventually comes President Bush or John McCain’s way. But I’m reading comments on right wing blogs like this:

This is an enemy government, folks. It’s an illegal, illegitimate government that doesn’t deserve power anymore. This is a government that has willingly separated itself from the people in order to advance an anti-American agenda. I’m not calling for a civil war, but it won’t matter what I say or do if this legislation passes. Millions of others will eventually act. It might take awhile, but act they will.

And this one:

Maybe it is time to impeach Bush. I don’t know if the country can take another year and half of this guy.

I’m still of the mind that we need to just wait until the next election, and if we lose, take our lumps and work hard to get these people out of office and replace them with people who serve the country, not the special interests. But I begin to understand the visceral hatred coming out of the left a lot better after this week. I understand the frustration and anger uncomfortably well. I’m just choosing not to give in to it.

Update: And Allahpundit calls for a tone-down of the rhetoric:

I just got done banning a bunch of people in the other immigration thread for various and sundry quasi-violent threats like this. I’m going to give you another chance, J, just because it’s the weekend.

If I see any more “civil war” garbage or “Bush deserves Saddam’s fate” or anything along those lines, you’re gone. As is anyone else who wants to join in.

He’s right – we do ourselves no favors by giving in to the rage that a lot of people are feeling right now. All it does is feed on itself and escalate. Again, I’m not saying I agree with the comments – just that I empathize with people feeling that angry. I’m angry too.
