The Footmouse - Beyond Gaming

Back when I taught computer classes, I had a student at NASA (Michoud) who had no arms. She had on a short sleeve shirt beneath which no stumps were visible. I have no idea how or when she lost her arms - perhaps a birth defect or an accident. I was perplexed how she could use a computer and how she would keep up with the class. But she sat down, slipped off her sandals, swung her legs up to the desk surface, picked up the keyboard with her feet and placed it on the floor. She did the same with the mouse. She typed reasonably fast, using her toes, and had no problem whatsoever keeping up with the class. I was amazed, and deeply impressed. Think of the fine muscle control you would need to touch type with your toes! I can’t imagine how long it would take to learn to do it. When I saw this product at SCI FI Tech, naturally I thought of her.

This foot mouse allows you to free your right hand up from mousing around by controlling the cursor via your right foot. Your left foot then controls the buttons, letting you use your computer with all four limbs simultaneously. Sure, it’ll take getting used to, but think about the advantages you’ll have in gaming when you’ve got both hands free to use the keyboard. — Adam Frucci
