The Jena 6: “Niggers in Jena”

I’m always interested in seeing how people get to this blog. For example, I get a lot of porn referrals, which just surprises the heck out of me. If I were looking for porn, I wouldn’t look at the domain “pursuingholiness.com.” It was disappointing to see this referral from Loyola University, a college my daughter has been considering, and where one of her friends will start school this week.

When I think “racist a**holes” I tend to think of upstate Louisiana. You know, David Duke/KKK territory. I don’t think, “urban Catholic college that cost around $20k a year.” Oh, I know there are jerks everywhere you go – and I also know some very nice people from upper and central Louisiana – but that’s the stereotype. Country hick racist vs. urbanite multi-culti. Life never is that simple; I just forget it from time to time.

UPDATE: This post isn’t very informative with regard to the Jena Six – it was just something I noticed in the referrals. There are literally dozens of Jena 6 posts in the archive that include every detail I could find about the case going back to the beginning. Here are a few with lots of links and info:

The Jena 6: Nooses Hang From The “White Tree” – a good place to start with a summary of the entire case.
The Jena 6: Since When Do Teenage Boys Watch Lonesome Dove? – the first Jena 6 post on this blog
Jena Six: Justin Barker Testifies at Mychal Bell Trial
Jena 6: More Testimony, Going To The Jury UPDATED – More on the testimony in the case including Justin Barkers injuries, which were NOT severe.
Jena 6: A Primer To The Racial Unrest In Jena, Louisiana – A who’s who in the Jena Six case. This has been copied and posted in many places.
Jena 6: Sentencing and Hope for Mychal Bell – The Louisiana Supreme Court overturned a conviction very similar to Mychal Bell’s.
Jena 6: Update and Background Info – How’d they get an all white jury? Was it deliberate?
Jena 6: Cross Burnings = Noose Hangings? – Prometheus 6 noted that cross burnings are illegal. Wouldn’t that also cover nooses?
Jena 6: Sentencing Delayed, DOJ Conducts Forum – the DOJ finally made it to Jena, but it was the PR division, not the civil rights division.
The Jena 6: Update on Mychal Bell – his status as of 8/19/07

  1. SOME ONE NEED TO TELL ME SOMETHING I PLAN TO TRAVEL FROM HAMMOND TO SUPPORT THE SIX YOUNG MEN WITH SUCH STIFF CHARGES IN JENA. BEFORE I GET THERE I NEED TO KNOW WHAT I FACE. I AM A CIVIC LEADER. I WANNA SUPPORT

    REV. BRENDA CAMPBELL

  2. Sandra says:

This is truly frightening, if they are able to get away with this what is next slavery? raping of the black women again by white males? For the superintendent of any school to see noose in a tree and saying it is a child’s pank is absolutely ridculos. This is because no one makes the people(the young white boys) accountable for the first crime. Seeing noose in a tree was a threat plain and simple. God be with us if these young men are committed to prison. I hope that the right people hear this story and step in and stop this injustice. Because if they get away with it here they (white people) will try it some where else.
It is a truly difficult time for our Black Men.

what is next slavery? raping of the black women again by white males?

Um, NO, I really do doubt it. I do agree it is a truly difficult time for black men, for a variety of reasons.

  4. Regina Taylor says:

The first I heard of the Jena 6 was yesterday on the Micheal Baisden show. I am outraged that society is going backwards and not forward. We must come together and let these boys know that we are on their side. We have to get out of the church and in the community! Prayer is oke but without works, prayer is no good.

  5. Juanita says:

I was reading a statement by the white man that was supposedly confronted at the convience store by 3 black youths. He said that they confronted him by saying “we got action”. If he so called was confronted by them first, why would he run to his truck and take out his gun to go back into the store when it’s only him against 3 other people. Why wouldn’t he just go to his car and leave if they were confronting him. If they were attempting to start trouble, he should have just left the store and came back when he felt safe. In addition, if they actually had confronted him at the convience store, wouldn’t they have followed him to his car, therefore, leaving no time for him to go to his car, unlock the door, grab his gun and walk back into the store and point it at them. I dont know but that statment of his just sounds a little twisted to me. what do you guys think?

  6. wanda coar says:

I am so outrage at the injustice in which is occuring the world today. i have a 16 yr old son and i know that he gets in altercations and i am very terrified at the fact that he could possibly be facing an incident like this. i am truly sorry that you are induring this during this time. god bless and keep you and your family well.
i am very upset and i pray for justice. i remember a long time ago that when you got to fighting with a person, you would fight abd then become frined the next day.
keep your head up and have a great day!
remember that through prayer and divine intervention all things are possible.

  7. Debi Blocker says:

    Dear Mychal,

Please hang in there. I know it’s hard for you, but we will fight. Fight for your freedom. I live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania my son and myself are educating and recruiting people here in Pittsburgh. My son Kenny will be in Jena to support you!!! I will keep you in your prayers always. Love, Debi

  8. From Jena says:

    Dear Mychal:

I realize that you have committed several violent acts against your community in recent years. I know you initiated a racially-charged beating against another high school student. Let’s pray that you can serve your sentence and realize the hate in your heart. Let’s pray that you get out of jail early enough to realize your God-given ability to play football (or do whatever you want to do with your life).

(at least that’s what I’d be telling him)

  9. Tonya says:

I am scared, sadden, disappointed, and disenheartened by what has happened in Jena.I have sons and I fear what could happen to them on any occassion. I will keep those young men in my prayers .

  10. mary gurewsloo says:

michael I hope while you are sitting in that jail cell you are thinking about everything that you did to others the charges are wrong against you but I knew your day was coming and you should think of all the bad things you did to others god does not like ugly

  11. Mrs. C says:

Mychal my young brother, you are not alone, in multitudes this issue will be resolved. God does not sleep, with this incident this will be an eye opener for all who has hate. My brother, be patient, just as Jesus was. He gave his life so others may have a chance to live again. He did it for all races, color, and creeds, for the human race. Job suffered boils from the top of his head to the soles of his feet and still remained faithful. Hold your head up and smile, your deliverance is awaiting. You my brother, will be a strength to all who are going thru simular siduations.

I want to give you lot’s of love my brother you will be out soon to help others. You know you now have world wide support. As for the comment from Jena posted August 28th at 6:35 pm This young man did not cause this fight it was a racial attack when the ropes were hung from the tree, this was not only personal but a statement on how the other young high school boys, who were, white felt about african americans period, this is sad, sad, sad. Mychal Bell is a good kid, but from what is going on, La Salle DA Reed Waiters and Jena police and to the person or persons who cut down that tree, you hate, you are unjust, and you have burried hidden secrets of past suff you’ve done to people of color, and african americans.

Now that the nation is in on your little secret Reed Waiters and Jena Police and to the persons who caused for this whole mess, and for the people who cut down the tree, show your hand and hang a rope on September 20th!

  12. Angela says:

I am curious as to if the ACLU are getting involved in this? Is this within their realm?

  13. From Jena says:

    Mrs. C:

“this incident this will be an eye opener for all who has hate”

If it is an eye opener for all who has hate, let Mychal Bell have many sleepless nights.

“I want to give you lot’s of love my brother you will be out soon to help others.”

If past is any indicator of the future, he will do just the opposite of help people. He has now been convicted of 5 violent criminal acts, and he’s only 17. Are you comparing him to Job in the Bible? I truly hope not.

Have you heard the phrase WWJD? What Would Jesus Do? Do you think he would promote this kind of violence?

“You know you now have world wide support.”

When the real truth comes out, it’s likely he won’t.

“This young man did not cause this fight”

So just because some people you know hang nooses, that gives 6 people a right to violently beat you while you’re unconscious? Again, WHAT WOULD JESUS DO??

“this was not only personal but a statement on how the other young high school boys, who were, white felt about african americans period, this is sad, sad, sad.”

So you are lumping every white student in that school together, and you are saying all of them deserve to be violently beaten? Is this what your saying? Please clarify.

“Mychal Bell is a good kid”

    ….bah-dah-bing…

    ….bad-dah-boom…

    No explanation is necessary.

“show your hand and hang a rope on September 20th”

If you’re gonna be there, hit me up. I’ll tell you about some good places to eat in Jena.

It’s sad how you seem very compassionate, yet you protect a violent criminal.

  14. jo says:

    to Jena from Aug 28,
it’s pretty clear that you also have some anger and hate issues WWJD for someone like you???? you obviously don’t understand what a noose hanging from a tree symbolizes or you support it… how hateful is that???? God does not condone hypocrisy either. if you are going to talk your talk (being a christian) then walk the walk and stop walking the line.

  15. NEW ORLEANS OWN says:

My take on the whole thing is it’s unfair justice period, all white jury, just like on the movie “A LICENSE TO KILL”the kid that hung the nooses started something point blank, b/c of a d… tree come on it was more than that in that town. And for WWJD he said an ” eye for an eye”, that white kid made a statement so did the black kids. And for the people saying that they terrorized their own community, look what whites have been doing for hundreds of years. It’s a good thing that that racist s… don’t play around here b/c it would be over very soon.

  16. From Jena says:

    Jo:

I have some clear anger issues because my town is being wrongly characterized by the media.

Excuse my French, Jo, but if you’ve read all of my postings on here and feel that I support noose hangings, then you are ignorant. I’ve said TIME and TIME again that the noose hangings were wrong, and warranted expulsion. EVERY white person in Jena I’ve asked about that agrees with me. The fact that the principal’s judgement was overruled by the school board doesn’t mean the whole town is racist.

“God does not condone hypocrisy either. ”

Please explain my hypocrisy. I’m trying to figure that out.

I was simply responding to the comparison Mrs. C made between Job and Mychal Bell. I disagree with her and I called her own it. Notice she has yet to respond.

  17. white boy says:

I did not know there were/are laws about hanging a rope/noose from a tree?what I do know there are laws about beating the heck out of someone and why do black people always have to gang up? It is never just one on one??

  18. platinum says:

First of all i think if this situation was nipped in the butt none of this wouldn’t be going on. I don’t know why all this black and white is going on. And for white boy why is it a promblem now when 6 black boys jump on one white boy. Was it a promblem when the black boys went to that party and they were jumped on. NO! Why wasn’t that white boy charge with pulling that gun on those black boys at that store. 10-20-Life. Its the law. Why did these black boys get charge as a adult for a school fight. Thats insaine. What Jena people need to do is to grow up. Slavery days is over.
