People who want that SCHIP expansion had better get out there and buy themselves a carton of Marlboros. Evidently it’s going to take 22 million new smokers at year, with a tax of 61 cents per pack, to cover the cost of it.

Finally…Star Trek style force fields on the way. Very, very cool... but I'll be even more excited about a transporter or replicator.

If I'd known in time that Phelpsians (decidedly NOT Christians) were supposed to be anywhere in the vicinity, I'd have joined the counter-protest too. I don't need to approve of “The Laramie Project” being performed in a public high school in order to despise the Phelps' philosophy and behavior, and I can't condemn them heartily enough.
North Miami Beach's multicultural committee is thinking about limiting religious holiday proclamations to one per religion. My question is, why does any government need to issue a religious holiday proclamation at all? Shouldn't it be the duty of the religious organization to announce their own holidays?
And while I'm at it, why does any government need a "multicultural committee?"
Michelle Obama just says No to Twinkie warning labels, instead taking a more reasonable view that giving parents "information about what's in the Twinkie" is adequate.
We hate you. We really hate you.
Sincerely,
The Public

The really sleazy thing about all of this is that it is FACT that a disproportionate number of smokers are also lower socioeconomic classes. So you will have the poorer among us paying for healthcare for middle class people.
Good point.
Yeah, the cigarette dibacle in this country is ridiculous. They’re so dangerous you could kill yourself for smoking them, and the folks unlucky enough to be around you as well, yet they’re still legal. So bad you can smoke them virtually nowhere in public, some places can lose your job for smoking AT HOME, because you could drive up the cost of employment-offered health care plans. Why not charge everyone who indulges in fast food everyday an extra “punishment for choosing unhealthy habits” tax while you’re at it? After all, obesity related conditions are also a huge factor in rising health costs.
Hard to say our government isn’t in cahoots with Big Business (again), at the expense of the American citizens. They know how deadly these cancer sticks are and choose to result in overtaxation of its consumers and hardworking Americans to foot the cost, rather than banning the use of the product completely. And the tobacco companies still rake in the profits. The only reason I can figure why cigarettes still aren’t considered a drug is because they don’t cause a “euphoric state” as most drugs do. I’ll be darned if they aren’t still as addictive, or deadly.
