I’ve made my opinion of pornography as clear as I can. It’s harmful to the viewer, and those who watch it are participating in abusing women. Still, the news that Australia is implementing a mandatory filter for it was disquieting. There are hundreds of opt-in filters available for free or for a nominal fee. It is the job of parents to implement them, or better yet, to not allow their children to use the internet unsupervised. Allowing the government to encroach further into parental responsibilities by regulating internet service providers is bad for society and bad for industry.

Christian Today > Porn filter rolled out for all Australians
The Australian Federal Government has announced all Internet Service Providers would be required to install a mandatory filter to protect children from pornography and violent websites.

The Federal Telecommunications Minister, Senator Stephen Conroy, made the statement on Monday, despite civil libertarians’ outcry over the filter measure. Critics labelled this rule as a form of censorship. Senator Conroy responded to the outrage, defiantly, by saying the new Rudd government had no qualms about the need to regulate the Internet.
