The replacement of the crime-ridden slums which were subjects of federal lawsuits before Katrina because they were in such bad condition with mixed income housing continues apace:
River Garden enters $69M final phase of construction
HRI Properties will break ground today on the $69-million second and final phase of construction of the sprawling, mixed-income River Garden development that replaced New Orleans’ St. Thomas housing project.Thirty-one new apartment buildings for low-, moderate- and middle-income tenants and a 2.75-acre park will be built between now and July of 2009 when the long-awaited development is expected to be completed.
Here’s what Sharon Jasper and others are protesting:
Because they’d rather have housing like this:

As Ms. Jasper said in December, “I might be poor but I don’t like to live poor. I thank God for a place to live but it’s pitiful what people give you.”
To Ms. Jasper and all the protesters: Enjoy the upgrade, courtesy of taxpayers. And remember, the purpose of public housing was to provide temporary help while people get back on their feet and become self-supporting again. If you want a real home that you own and can control, you have to pay for it yourself.
