Excellent news - guns on campus!
This is excellent news, especially given that my daughter is going to start college in December:
House panel OKs concealed weapons on college campuses - Times-Picayune - NOLA.com
Despite opposition from student government leaders and top state education officials, a House committee Thursday took the first step toward allowing authorized concealed weapons on college campuses.
She’s an excellent shot, and if she has the option to carry a handgun instead of just a taser, I’ll be delighted.

I wholeheartedly agree that we should have guns on campus. I go to the University of Tennessee, where students get robbed (on average) about every two weeks because all the thugs in the city know that students are never armed.
One of our legislators tried to allow only professors to have guns — because he didn’t think he could get any support if he tried to arm students, too. But like in your article, a bunch of idiot teachers and student government hippies stood up against it, along with the local newspaper and others, and it the bill died in committee.
The stupid cowards don’t want to arm themselves, but then they whine at the police any time someone gets hurt. They expect the government to shield them from all evil.

Drew, are tasers and stun guns outlawed on your campus too?

As far as I know, those are allowed, but guns would provide the most effective deterrent. Early in the semester we even heard about a group of students getting robbed at gunpoint inside a university-owned apartment.
The law bans “any firearm, explosive, explosive weapon, bowie knife, hawk bill knife, ice pick, dagger, slingshot, leaded cane, switchblade knife, blackjack, knuckles or any other weapon of like kind,” but probably not tasers.

And I think you may have misunderstood — one of our legislators tried to relax the prohibition on weapons, but he failed. We are totally unarmed and defenseless at my school currently.

Scary stuff. I just emailed my state legislator about it… hopefully we’ll get this through, although I doubt it.
