Here’s how you “make change” if you’re part of the Great Unwashed, and there’s no need to think three steps ahead to do it. Whatever the sale amount is, count up to the total. If the total is $1.56, and you need to provide change for a $5 bill, then you add four cents to get to $1.60, four dimes to get to $2, then three $1 bills to reach $5. See? That was easy. You don’t even have to do math; just count. Can we move on ™ to another expression, please?
I am so sick of hearing that we need to “make change.” It’s nonsensical and ungrammatical. If Bush said it they’d be all over him like white on rice, mocking his abuse of the language. We “need to change” or “must change” or perhaps we could “effect change.” And in the litany of complaints about exactly how much America sucks and how higher taxes can fix it, I’d be really interested to learn just exactly what’s so different about Obama. He’s about the same as every other pol we’ve been subjected to, only less experienced, less qualified and with hagiographic media coverage.
