What I’m Reading Instead of Working

Healthcare
That free health care people keep wanting to get over here? You might want to think again before you declare how much better it is than what we have now:
The [cancer] drugs which also go by the names Avastin (bevacizumab), Nexavar (sorafenib), Sutent (sunitinib) and Torisel (temsirolimus) were found by the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to provide “significant gains” in survival.
However, further analysis showed they did not meet NICE criteria for “cost-effectiveness”.
Not to mention the vermin. We have vermin of our own, proving that government funded healthcare leads to all sorts of problems:
The top executive of a Los Angeles hospital was arrested Wednesday as federal agents raided three medical centers while investigating an alleged scheme to recruit homeless people and bill government programs for millions of dollars in unnecessary health services, authorities said.
Crime
Some terrorists are more equal than others, on college campuses anyway. How fast do you think informants would step up and the community would rally if abortionists were being targeted?
And some people the police would like to question get to just say no.
AIDS/HIV
Mexican men are getting HIV and it’s ALL OUR FAULT! Because if we didn’t let them come here illegally, they wouldn’t be homesick enough to patronize prostitutes or destitute enough to turn to prostitution. Best line in the article:
And if they are deported, they can take the virus back home with them, the researchers told an international conference on AIDS in Mexico City.
Yes, just like they brought their drug resistant TB and hepatitis and their Hansen’s Disease (leprosy) over here. Because unlike the Star Trek transporters, the border is not armed with technology that blocks viruses, bacteria, and harmful microbes. The recent revival of the fact that risky behavior, specifically anal sex, increases the probability you’ll get HIV/AIDS, and that homosexual men are the demographic most likely to engage in anal sex, proceeds apace. In other news, water is wet. This is classic:
“We have come full circle,” Michel Sidibe, assistant secretary general of the United Nations, said in an interview. “In the beginning, gay men in places like San Francisco and New York proved we could do prevention. When we moved from that and started talking about the broad scope of the epidemic, suddenly men who have sex with men became marginalized.”
That might have something to do with the decades-long public relations campaign that insisted that HIV was not a “gay disease” and that anyone was subject to get it, regardless of their behavior. Now all of a sudden they’re turning that around so that “men who have sex with men became marginalized” - thus gaining another bite at the victim apple. Well played. Too late, though. It would have been better if he could have included that twist in this ad campaign: “HIV is a Gay Disease. Own it. End it.” After all, we can’t let things like personal responsibility get in the way of millions of dollars of grant money and a new social construct. A lot of people have been killed by the quest to normalize homosexual behavior. Well, the cure may be in sight, rendering all this moot and bringing back consequence-free anal sex for everybody. Well, except for all the other STDs you can get that way.
Speaking of illegal immigration…
Joe Arpaio, eat your heart out. Italy has immigrant internment centers guarded by the military. And this, wow -
Parliament also recently passed a law specifying that illegal immigrants convicted of crimes can be held for up to a third longer than Italians convicted of the same felony. Property rented to illegal immigrants can be confiscated under the new legislation.
In Spain, they’re paying them to go home, and for those they permit to stay, doing a better job of forcing assimilation.
The Catalan regional government, among the most progressive in Spain, has authorized a program that would temporarily segregate newly arrived immigrant children from non-European countries in special schools designed to better prepare them for integration into the regular educational system.
See Dubya noticed this too but was interested in the fact that Italy deployed the military to deal with the problem.
Mexico is mad that Texas violated international law by executing a Mexican rapist? Well, SCOTUS says the Vienna conventions can’t be applied, so it was legal. But if Mexico is that worried about the health and safety of their criminals, they could just stop exporting them here.
Oh, and identity theft by illegals is NOT a victimless crime.
From the No Good Deed Goes Unpunished Department
The eeevil Bushco Regime created the biggest and most environmentally protected area of ocean in the world.
The result has been that since Bush declared the area a protected national monument, boats and divers have been picking up far less debris than they were removing before the area was protected.
“We are collecting less,” acknowledged Steve Thur, acting coral program director for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which manages the monument with the state of Hawaii and Fish and Wildlife Service.
Thur said Bush’s budget requests were based on a faulty annual debris accumulation rate of 28 tons. New research has shown double that amount floats into the monument each year.
Maybe they could address the fact that people are throwing hundreds of tons of garbage into the ocean and try to put a stop to it.
Jobless claims have increased to “new six year high” but no mention of the fact of how amazingly low they have been for the majority of the Bush administration.
The New Nuremburg trials - coming soon to a Congressional basement near you?
Media Shenanigans
In the tank - We can deny it, but race slithers into campaign - because Obama keeps bringing it up. Because if you don’t support Obama, you’re a raaacist!
Another grim milestone for the media to crow over - over 500 soldiers have died in Iraq.
Personal moral failings (formerly known as sins) like adultery have to be handled responsibly - if you’re a Democrat. So does this mean it’ll finally be listed in Wikipedia?
Other Shenanigans
Victoria Osteen apparently went postal over a spot on the arm of her seat on a Continental flight.
The Federal Aviation Administration fined Victoria Osteen $3,000 for interfering with a crew member. The FAA report states Victoria Osteen asked another attendant to clean a liquid on her first-class seat armrest. When that attendant said she would get another flight attendant, Osteen grabbed a second flight attendant and took her to the seat, the report said.
The second attendant said she would call cleaning personnel and headed to the cockpit, the FAA said. Victoria Osteen followed her and came across Brown, whom she pushed and elbowed in an attempt to get to the cockpit, according to the report.
Way to represent! Evidently she wanted her best flight now. Are the Osteens finally jumping the shark? Time did a better job of presenting Christianity than Joel Osteen, who is as far off base theologically as The Secret and Stuart Smalley.
Well, break’s over - back on my head!

A minor point on the verdict from NICE - anyone who wants it is in broadly the same position in the UK that they would be in in the US; if they want to take the drug they can, they’ll just have to pay for it.
