Choices

I am on the verge of no longer being able to offer the Democrats the benefit of the doubt.  For a long time, my premise has been that they just don’t know any better.  They really don’t understand the consequences of what they espouse.  Barney Frank, in particular, is now disabusing me of this idealistic notion.

President Bush will address the nation tonight to scare us into a more socialist state.  And for all I know, he could be correct - maybe things are that dire.  But since his administration has seen fit to issue warnings about this 18 times in 2008 alone; since McCain has tried to put a stop to it several times, most recently in 2006; since Republicans attempted to be the voice of reason several times since 1999 on this issue - if all these people KNEW that this crisis was coming, why didn’t they SAY SOMETHING SOONER?!  And by “say something” I mean get the word out to the general public in a way that the media and the Democrats (but I repeat myself) could not deny.

Was there no PR firm that would run a “we need to talk about this,” campaign?  Could they not have made this upcoming DIRE FINANCIAL EMERGENCY! a campaign issue?  Could President Bush not have addressed the nation in 2006 when the Senate Banking committee came down on a party line vote to NOT DEAL WITH THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM!  No.  They couldn’t be bothered.  Now they can sit back and say, “I told you so,” (although the media won’t report it) but whatever satisfaction they may take in being correct is also the indictment against them for not trying harder to stop it.  As damned as the Democrats are, I think the Republicans are twice damned for knowing better, being on the side of what’s right, and continuing quietly down the wrong path anyway.

What President Bush should say, as Michelle Malkin suggests is, “Never mind.“  He should tell the truth about how we got here, and say that everybody’s going to have to take their lumps for it. It’s time for us all to sit down with a cup of coffee and reflect on our misplaced priorities and on the fact that we’re choosing to allow a coup to take place right under our noses.  It’s not too late for leadership, if any remains.  As the movie line goes, it’s time to choose between what is easy and what is right.
