After listening/watching McCain these many weeks, my opinion is that McCain really does not want to be president. I think has decided that he is much happier in the Senate being America's "Beloved Maverick". What other explanation can you give for his Zelig-like act of trying to become indistinguishable from Obama?

IMHO he is consciously or subconsciously trying to throw the election. It will be up to Sarah to do all the heavy lifting and drag McCain over the finish line. She is a strong woman, but that is asking too much of her.

He's just terribly deluded. His priorities are completely out of whack. He thinks Americans truly care about ending earmarks and establishing "bipartisanship" more than anything else. In reality, earmarks are somewhat of a minor issue (as Obama pointed out in the debate), and most Americans would rather accomplish their ideological goals than compromise them.

Today he pointed out that he wants to draft Al Gore to help him craft global warming legislation. (!)

His problem is that he is basically weak. He is the domestic equivalent of a Neville Chamberlain or Richard Nixon. We are in a war. But like you said, he doesn't want to fight.

If he doesn't want to fight, he oughta at least let Sarah Palin loose. At this point, things are getting desperate, and there seems little to lose.

It's been said that his problem is that he is truly a nice guy.
It appears that in politics nice guys finish last.

I've felt this way for some time. I've also noticed he fought harder with Republicans in the primaries then he fights with Obama. I haven't figured out why that might be. Its not because Obama isn't an easy target, as his background, associations, voting record, ethics, gaffes make him a goldmine.
Here are my choices for reasons why:
A) McCain may be afraid of being seen as racist for no particular reason.
( Some white guys have this disease)
B) McCain may be forgetful when dealing with the stress of a live one on one debate. (Doesn't have to be senility, stress can take anyone down)
C) McCain may have skeletons about Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac that haven't seen the light of day. (Maybe he's been dating Barney Frank's old Fannie Flame on the side)
D) McCain may not be as anxious to be President after undergoing the transformation that one' s handlers may push you into as they seek to appeal to everyone. ( is it worth it?)
E) McCain is discouraged because 1/2 of the electorate are displaying outward signs of hatred. (Thin skin politician?)
F) All of the above

I agree.

He is just repeating his mistakes during the 2000 campaign.

Maybe he should just retire. He is hurting a lot of people since he won't fight for his own campaign. He is hurting Gov. Palin because of that.
