As the culmination of the best. Election. EVAR I’m now reliably informed that I’m not just a racist, I’m a sociopath too. Well, that’s the LA Times for you.
Hairston of Virginia, the descendant of slave owners, thought Obama, if elected, would quell overseas critics who accuse the United States of racism. If critics like Steele called that “white guilt,” he said, then so be it.
Guilt, he said, “has a place and a role. Those who fail to feel guilt are sociopaths.”
Well, I confess: I don’t feel guilt over American slavery. Are the English and Scots required to feel guilt about the slavery that occurred in their countries? How about the Spanish? The Dutch? The Portuguese? How many Europeans flagellate themselves over this? If you see it, let me know.
Is our history of American slavery deplorable? Yes, indeed. John Adams had it right, and Thomas Jefferson was wrong.
“Consenting to slavery is a sacrilegious breach of trust, as offensive in the sight of God as it is derogatory from our own honor or interest of happiness.”
But I don’t feel guilt for what I didn’t do, nor do I feel guilt for the concept that I may have indirectly benefited by it. Nor should the English feel guilt for what their ancestors did to my Irish ancestors. Of all nations, America should be the one looking forward and fighting for the future. We should be working to make the world a better place today.
Sudan and Mauritania are conducting slavery TODAY. Right now. With the full knowledge and cooperation of their governments. Where is the outrage for that? We had a great deal more outrage for apartheid than we do for modern day slavery. The failure to address modern day slavery makes it abundantly clear that the real issue isn’t slavery at all. It’s just another bludgeon to use for political gain.
I’m not voting for Obama. It has absolutely nothing to do with his race. I could vote for JC Watts with ease. I could vote for Michael Steele without a qualm. Depending on who was running against her in a primary, I could vote for Condi Rice. I would vote for Zo twice, given the chance.
My failure to vote for Obama is entirely about his views, intentions and character.
