Vote! (UPDATED) Polled. Puma spotted!

Finally.  I’m sick to death of politics and am just ready for it to be over. I care who wins – deeply.  But I’m not worried.  God is sovereign, and it is He who selects our rulers.  Which is not to say you shouldn’t vote – you should!

God is sovereign, but that doesn’t mean our vote doesn’t count. Remember that God ordains both the means and the ends. He told Joshua, “I have given you Jericho,” (Joshua 6:2), but the people still had to march around the city. If they didn’t march, the walls wouldn’t fall.

Verses to remember:

  • Romans 13:1-2
  • Titus 3:1-2
  • Hebrews 11:13-16
  • 1Timothy 2:1-4
  • Proverbs 16:4 ;-)

I’ll be updating this post with election-related info all day (new stuff on top.)

Look!  a PUMA!  Well, probably a PUMA…

Democrat. Live and vote in BR. My precinct is at a city park rec center with 2 booths each for A-K and L-Z last names. Arrived to find a LONG single line. Noticed the clearly written signs saying “A-K Separate Line”.  Walked past all the lemmings (A-Z) standing in the A-K only (1 hour wait) line. Signed in at the empty L-M sign-in table and left 3 minutes later after successfuly voting for McCain, Landrieu, and other listed items.

Rasmussen just polled me!  They asked the standard demographic questions, plus – Is the country going in the right direction?  Do I approve of Bush?  Did I vote, when, and who for?  Am I more concerned with national security, economics, domestic (SS, healthcare), cultural (abortion), or fiscal issues?  Do I have a favorable/unfavorable opinion of McCain, Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi?  Who’s a better leader? What’s more important – border control or legalization?  Do I approve of offshore drilling?  I’m looking forward to seeing the results.  I was quite tempted to lie but I played it straight.

The Anchoress has a great roundup, with some lagniappe – Zo!

Anecdotal, but… voting seems pretty high in the NOLA area.  At my precinct and that of several friends I’ve spoken to, there are crowds and lines, but things seem to be going smoothly.  At my precinct, there were two first time voters.  Aggressively obnoxious, bleached blond fortysomethings who insisted they were being disenfranchised.  (They were standing in line for the wrong precinct; after Katrina my precinct was moved to the same polling place with several others.)  Bozos.  They were spoken to calmly and patiently, while they kept trying to escalate the situation.  Precinct workers don’t get paid enough.  Only one “yute.”

“We were told not to ask for identification.”

Obama still angry about attacks on his wife?  (By “attack” he means “report what she said”…)  Next time don’t send her out to campaign for you, then.

Cheating.

If good government isn’t enough enticement to vote, how about free snacks?

A prayer on election day.

I’m concerned about this too… we need a concerted effort in every state to tighten up voting regulations.  There is no good reason not to require voter ID. Here’s a map I put together showing how lax the ID requirements are (related post here):

There is no good reason to have same day registration.  We need to make fraud prevention a priority, and this sort of thing should be a criminal offense.

I’d like to point out that Washington is largely vote by mail now.

I checked my online registration a lot. I still remember last time, when a pretty decent chunk of folks found out they’d been registered to absentee vote– and it wasn’t their address the ballot was sent to, either.

I can’t imagine how I’d respond if I learned someone voted in my name. “Postal” is a good starting point. I wonder what recourse there is for that… if any; if you get a chance to cast a ballot yourself or if you’re just told to get over it.
