I am — or was — a smoker.
I’m not proud of it. I’m aware of the health risks, I know it’s expensive, I understand I’m affecting other people’s health and I know it makes me smell bad.
But that’s all over. The government didn’t leave me much of a choice.
… And if state Rep. Karen Carter Peterson, D-New Orleans, has her way, smokers in Louisiana will be spending nearly $9 a pack, raising my tobacco tab to nearly $63 a week.
Don’t do it! Puff away! Make the sacrifice! After all, all those helpless SCHIP dependents are counting on you!



So what are they going to tax next when the smokers ‘go Galt’? Alcohol? Candy? Whatever the idiotically-demonized product of the month is?
