I’ve been meaning to link this – the Nicene Creed and a couple of posts on a book about it over at Traveling the Granite Bridge. I’ve always been a fan of the Creed because it’s such a nice “pocket doctrine” but really rich when you break it down. Business owners and anyone doing marketing are advised to have an “elevator pitch” ready to introduce themselves, their business, and their product very quickly. The Nicene Creed serves nicely in that capacity and also provides a baseline for defining Christianity. The devil’s in the details, as the saying goes… it can be interpreted in ways that orthodox Christians might find objectionable but overall, I think it’s worth memorizing as a nice summing-up of the faith.

It’s alright, I guess, but I’m not really a huge fan of it. It does a decent job listing some basic facts, but it doesn’t actually explain the gospel message so it seems extremely limited.
